Chapter 17
Blade
It had been three days since Sophia first came to me to blow off some steam. Every day she brought me food and we talked. I refused to answer any more of her seemingly innocent questions about my club. Truth be told, I didnât trust her. She was the honey pot after all. I thought every damn day about leaving, but then sheâd come to visit me and Iâd tell myself tomorrow was the day.
Her brothers, I saw not at all, but I heard them stomping around upstairs. Unlike them, Sophia was light-footed. It was strange that I could differentiate her footsteps from the others in the house.
Since my time was short, I didnât deny myself the guilty pleasure of conversation, nor did I turn her away when she came to visit me at night. I should have sent her away. I craved everything to do with the woman and loathed the day I would be forced to part ways with her.
No matter how much I filthened her up with sex, she always walked down the steps the next morning looking fresh and pristine. Today was no different. I rolled up from the ground, eager to watch her come to me yet again.
Though it had only been days, it seemed like forever since Iâd seen the sunlight. I was beginning to think of Sophie as my sunlight during these dark days. She had the face of an angel and her smile lit all the dark places in my cold, dead heart. In love with the very woman I could never trust, that was my curse.
I noticed something was wrong the moment I looked into her eyes. Lurking in the depths was desperation, fear, and guilt. I knew without asking what that meant. Daddy was coming home today to torture and kill me. I ground the heel of my boot into the cement floor, reassured by what I had hidden there.
Like always, I took the tray from her and sat it on the table. Rather than sitting down at the table, she began to pace. I stood there and waited for her to gather her thoughts. Iâd realized somewhere along the way that the less I talked, the more she filled the silence with her own thoughts, anxieties, and desires for the future.
Finally, she stopped in front of me. Her big, innocent hazel eyes searched my face. âMy father is on his way here, Blade. Tell him what he wants to know. You donât have to be a hero. Thereâs no dignity in a painful death.â
I reached out and snagged her arm, drawing her closer. âDonât worry about me, sweetness. Iâve been through worse and I know how to handle myself.â
Her hands clutched the now-sweaty t-shirt sheâd brought me to wear at some point , giving it a little jerk. âNicco, Diego, and I talked it over. We think your best chance at survival is telling him everything you know right from the start. Donât provoke him by being a smartass or making him get rough with you.
